A Campus-wide agreement with Microsoft for office software, core access licenses and operating system upgrades has been put in place for all University-owned computers, effective July 1, 2006 and for home use by faculty and staff effective September 2006.
The following software products will be included in the MS Campus agreement:
- Operating System Upgrades
- Office Professional (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word)
- Core Client Access Licenses (CALs) for: Microsoft Windows® Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft Systems Management Server, and Microsoft SharePoint™ Portal Server.
Campus-Wide Benefits
- Streamlined software procurement process for current technology
With subscription licensing, you're licensed to run the most current version of the software products included in the subscription-including any upgrades and downgrades of those products. This flexibility means always having the very best software for your users with complete flexibility in deployment options.
- Savings in $$ that is typically set aside for the costs of upgrades
For example, under the select agreement a computer needing an operating system upgrade and office suite license costs about $100. This cost would be incurred every time a computer needed to be upgraded, plus the cost for needed media. Under the campus agreement, all licenses for upgrades of the products listed above are FREE. Being a part of a campus agreement now, means that faculty/staff will be also be able to acquire the Vista Operating System and Office 2007, which are expected to be available from Microsoft in one to two years, free of charge!
- Simplified software asset management
Subscription licensing eliminates the need to track licenses for individual products on individual computers. This is especially helpful for managing software assets in a decentralized environment.
- Multiple computer support
The total cost of the Microsoft Campus Agreement is determined by an FTE calculation in order to provide the university with a more reasonable price rather than having to individually account for a total number of computers. However, once the total cost is determined, the Campus Agreement Subscription provides licensing coverage for all computers within a department for the selected products. This is especially beneficial to those faculty and staff that have more than one work computer. This agreement applies to all university owned desktops, laptops, and open access computer labs.
- Easy compliance
Because all of your institution's computers and users are licensed for the term of the agreement, it's easy to be sure that you're fully-licensed for the selected products.
- Work at home Option
This is a separate component of the Microsoft Campus Agreement which comes as a benefit to the faculty and staff of the University. Participation in the "Work at Home" portion of the Campus Agreement is voluntary and is a means by which the University can provide faculty and staff the opportunity to acquire the most up to date version of OS and Office products for the purpose of conducting FSU related work on their personal computers. There is no cost to the faculty/staff member for the license. However, there is a charge through the Authorized Microsoft Reseller for the purchase and shipping of the "work at home" installation media and its designated authorization code ($19.95).
In order to finance this agreement, the Office of Technology Integration’s (OTI) software licensing auxiliary will charge a fee, per new computer purchased, of $100 per non Apple desktop/laptop and $50 per Apple desktop/laptop. No fee will be charged for computers intended to run UNIX only.
Information on the End User License Agreement (EULA), which is activated with each assigned authorization code, and other related licensing topics can be found at http://usl.fsu.edu/FAQ-USL-Compliance.html.
